Mt Merbabu (3142 m)
The shapes of Mt Merbabu and Mt Lawu are identical. Both have no active craters as they were parts of old volcanic mountains. The peaks of these two mountains formed plateau caused by erosion and nearly lost its natural forest.
From the south, we may walk through Selo village to reach both Mt Merapi and Mt Merbabu. From the north, Kopeng village, we can reach only Mt Merbabu.
To reach Kopeng, we may travel by bus from Yogyakarta to Magelang, then to Salatiga and finally to Kopeng village. In Kopeng village, there are many hotels and inns, also a tourist park where we can put up a tent for overnight stay. We should continue trekking to Tekala village where we should complete preparation for the climbing and carry water since there is no water on the way. In case we need a guide we may obtain in Kopeng village.
Walking through vegetable and acacia garden, we continue our journey upward and finally reach the ridge. In the ridge, we can find a dilapidated hut at 2400 m high. Walking upward from the hut, we will pass another incline, where we can get a scenic panorama of the surrounding without any hindrance. There is another hut for weather measurement on the first peak (2800 m high). From this place we can look at the highest peak in front, and it will take about 1 and half hours to reach the peak. On the way to the peak we come across the dead salfatara and steep ridge. Climbing the peak from Kopeng takes nearly 8 hours whereas the return will spend nearly 5 hours.
The easiest way to climb successfully both Mt Merapi and Mt Merbabu is from Selo village, Boyolali district, but we will find steep paths and it will make us exhausted. Also, we have to climb another mountain as high as the main peak of Mt Merbabu. Climbing the peak of Mt Merbabu from Selo takes approximately 6 or 7 hours, and about 5 hours to return.
